The Art of Storytelling – Part 3: The Ingredients

Written by Ari Daniel

When putting together a story, think about the basic ingredients that you’re going to need:
ingredients

  • Characters (both animate and inanimate, such as the developing cells of the embryo)
  • An indication as to why the reader, listener, or viewer should care
  • Setting
  • Stakes
  • A beginning, middle, and ending
  • Sensory details
  • And your audience will inform the approach that you take

These are the same elements that you find in novels and movies, but they often don’t make it into official science publications.
